FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AARC Receives Donations

12/30/2002 -- The Alger Amateur Radio Club has received a gracious donation of communications equipment.  Eighteen Motorola MICOR Base and repeater stations for Six Meters, Two Meters and 23 cm Bands also included were two Sinclair duplexers for Six Meters and a set of duplexers for the 23 cm band.   The club also received from the same donor, a Johnson base station and another GE Master II Base Station, and five MICOR Mobile radios.

We are very excited about the new options that this equipment presents us with.  Look for updates to our Repeater Service section of this website for additional information on this new equipment.

On a separate note,  the AARC  received a cash donation from the Pro Rally that visited in the Fall of 2002.   We are very grateful for their continued support.

In 2003 the AARC had received a $3000.00 donation from the MAX and Phyllis Reynolds Foundation, in Marquette, Michigan that has allowed the AARC to acquire radios, and antennas needed to establish a working VHS and HF Ham radio capability at the office of the Alger County Emergency Coordinator of the Alger County Sheriff Department and established the initial fund toward a Grand Marais repeater site.  A subsequent donation of $5,000.00 from the Max and Phyllis Reynolds Foundation in 2004 has become a substantial part of the financial resources needed to establish a 2-meter repeater site in Grand Marais, Michigan, utilizing leased tower space from Global Tower Partners and the Dobson company. The AARC additionally has received a $5,000.00 donation from the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in December 2005, and $3,000.00 in July, 2007, as a portion of the tribe's 2% casino donation program.  The final portion of the monies needed to pay for the first of a 3-year tower lease period,  purchase liability insurance, radio equipment for the Grand Marais repeater site and to pay for the services of an engineering tower structural study, as well as tower climbers to install the antennas and hard-line.

An earlier  2005 Homeland Security grant of nearly $1,000.00, acquired through the Alger County Sheriff Department,  purchased the new 2-meter antenna to be installed on the Grand Marais tower.

In 2006, Homeland Security purchased a 3000 watt generator for the Wetmore Repeater location to keep the repeater on the air during power outages.
